August 31-Thomasville-After Hurricane Ida caused severe damage and hundreds of thousands of people lost power, local residents decided to participate in the restoration of Louisiana.
Sheila Searcy, a Toyota employee in Thomasville, was moved to start the donation activity after seeing 12 tugboats almost destroyed by the storm.
Although there is no direct relationship with any of the affected crew members, Searcy calls them family members because of their hard work for the people in the community.
“We know that many people there are struggling with this,” she said. “It was a bit of a blow to me, so I decided to put the drives together. I thought why not. I saw an opportunity, I took it and took it.”
So far, Searcy has raised more than $300 in donations, which helped her make 10 hygiene kits, which she will send to Louisiana this weekend.
She also asked the Thomasville community to donate any hygiene products, such as toothpaste, feminine products and wet wipes, to help her make more packaging.
“I try to encourage people to think about things that most people don’t think of as donations, (for example) feminine hygiene products and baby bags,” she said. “People are donating money, gasoline, and non-perishable food all day long, but these things seem to disappear in the mix. Now, we don’t accept any donations of clothes, but things that will definitely be forgotten. Hygiene products are a big thing. ”
Searcy said she will continue to drive to Louisiana every weekend to deliver donations until she no longer needs help.
“I really don’t have a goal. My goal is just to help as much as possible,” she said. “I told my husband that as long as donations come in and it is worth the trip, I will go.”
She hopes that her donation will send a message of hope to anyone in Louisiana affected by the devastation of the storm.
“I just hope it can help them, cheer them up, and let them know that even if our country is now divided, there are still people everywhere supporting them, and we have their support,” she said.
Anyone interested in donating hygiene products can send them to the box set up by Thomasville Toyota, or contact Sheila at Sheila@Thomasvilletoyota.com to arrange a pick-up time.
