Wet wipes have become a common household item, but the impact on the environment is terrible
The authorities of Alcalá de Guadaíra (Spain) have started a pilot project to implement a retention system for wet wipes and napkins, which are flushed into household toilets and eventually into the Guadaira River. The retainer will be put into use in more than 10 weeks, which will prevent the accumulation of this pollutant and cause serious damage to the local ecosystem.
Unlike toilet paper, most types of wet wipes are insoluble in water. They are not designed to enter the toilet, but it is a common habit to throw them there instead of the trash can.
During heavy rains, the network sanitation system releases excess rainwater into the spillway that flows into the channel. However, when these are blocked by undissolved substances, serious problems and the possibility of flooding can occur.
The City Council regularly cleans the banks of the park area to eliminate spills, including sanitary napkins. This time, the authorities decided to try a more convenient solution based on simple comb and net technology.
The intervention will affect three spillways, and the budget allocation is close to 160,000 Euros. For example, in the Cercadillos spillway, a dual filtration system will be installed. Its first part will include a comb for holding wipes and paper, and the second part, made of netting, will capture the finer remains that manage to pass through the first layer.
While installing the retention system, the local government is also launching a campaign with the motto “wipe the trash can”. The initiative aims to raise awareness among citizens not to flush such materials into the toilet.
