Wet wipes and condoms scattered on the banks of the Maidstone River

After the recent heavy rains, the pressure on the sewer system has relieved the drain cover, and waste has been scattered around the Lane River local nature reserve in Maidstone.
This problem was discovered by Cllr Tony Harwood (Liberal Democrats). In addition to fulfilling his civic duties, he is also the chairman of the Lianhe Nature Reserve Management Committee.
He said: “The manhole cover was removed, and a large number of sanitary products, condoms and wet wipes were scattered along the river bank.
“I have filled two sacks with the rag from the sidewalk itself, but the pollution level is so high that it requires professional cleaning and intervention.”
Cllr Harwood said: “Before the severely blocked sewer infrastructure is cleaned up, it is clear that every heavy rain will cause this overload.”
He said: “The manhole cover also has an angle. It may collapse without warning, putting the public in danger.”
Algae blooms appeared in the river itself, and Cllr Harwood suspected that this might also be the result of sewage discharge.
Since 2014, Cllr Harwood has listed 10 cases of serious sewage spills on site-this does not include small spills that occur regularly during heavy rains. Report to the Environment Agency every time.
The last time he happened was on January 9, 2020, when the sidewalks on both sides of the Ryan River near the border of the Turkish mill were submerged by human excrement about a foot deep. The river was dyed dark gray and filled with wet tissues and sanitary napkins.
