Neighbors are worried that the proposed parking lot will harm groundhogs

Arapahoe County, Colorado-If the proposal to develop a parking lot moves forward, a prairie dog may be in danger. The Arapahoe County Committee will discuss the rezoning application at the board meeting on Tuesday, July 27.
The vacant lot is located near E. Harvard Avenue and S. Trenton Way, south of the Comcast Building in Iliff Business Park. This land is also home to a group of black-tailed prairie dogs. According to a report submitted to the county, a wildlife biologist estimated that there were about 80 marmots in the site.
She said that the children nearby like to watch groundhogs, and she doesn’t want to see anything happen to them.
“I beg them to do the right thing only for people who live in the area and Arapahoe County,” Anderson said.
Comcast submitted an application last year to develop a parking lot with 188 parking spaces and 10 landscape islands. The Planning Committee had previously recommended approval by 7 votes to 0 at a meeting held in October 2020.
An assessment listed several options for the colony, including relocation, but added that if a location cannot be found, Comcast hopes to explore other prairie dog management alternatives.
