Improve the sustainability of nonwoven products in a cost-effective way-Nonwovens Industry Magazine

A study conducted by the European Commission on the top 10 marine debris projects found on European beaches shows that approximately 8.1% of wet wipes and approximately 1.4% of feminine hygiene products are some of the main products manufactured in the nonwoven value chain. As these products increasingly enter scanners, there is an urgent need to find sustainable alternatives and ensure more consumer acceptance in a cost-effective manner.
The search for sustainable alternatives begins with sustainable raw materials. If we look at the global consumption of all staple fibers used in the nonwovens value chain, we can determine that the share of plastic-based staple fibers used in the global nonwovens value chain is about 54%, and the second best sustainable alternative The consumption of viscose/lyocell and wood pulp are about 8% and 16% respectively. This clearly shows that viscose wood pulp is the solution.
Looking at the different nonwoven technology, it is important that the fiber can be processed with the best efficiency and achieve the desired result in the product. According to the recent EU SUPd ruling, this is very important for evaluating which non-plastic raw materials can be potential solutions.
The key non-woven technology and compatibility of non-plastic raw material selection for wet wipes/feminine hygiene products
In this regard, Birla PurocelTM has developed a series of sustainable fiber innovations for various nonwoven applications. Birla PurocelTM is a non-woven fiber brand of Birla Cellulose. At Birla PurocelTM, their philosophy is based on three key pillars-earth, innovation and partnership. Based on the same concept, Birla has launched a large number of innovative fibers, such as Purocel EcoDry, Purocel EcoFlush, Purocel Antimicrobial, Purocel Quat Release (QR) and Purocel Eco.
Biodegradable and compostable viscose fiber with engineered hydrophobicity for sustainable and environmentally friendly absorbent hygienic disposable products (AHP)
It can be used to make washable wipes to prevent clogging by sewage. Short fibers provide a good balance between strength and dispersion
Reinforced fibers help to make non-woven fabrics, limit the growth of microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria; and kill them to 99.9% (terms and conditions apply)
Sustainable fibers can be effectively cleaned and disinfected. These special fibers have been injected with quaternary ammonium salt release technology, which can release quaternary ammonium salt easily and quickly during the cleaning process
Eco-enhanced viscose, create a better tomorrow. It can be identified in the final product by a unique molecular tracer that can be traced back to its source
All these Purocel products are just a few of the many innovative fibers that Birla uses for a large number of nonwoven applications. Birla has invested in state-of-the-art research and development, which allows them to work closely with their value chain partners through partnerships to create these innovative fibers for a better planet.
Understanding the importance of delivering sustainable innovation quickly to consumers in the form of final products, Birla moved from self-development of fibers to co-creation of final products-one of the best ways to speed up the development cycle. Birla’s co-creation method was used to develop their product Purocel EcoDry, which was validated through consumer research on the final product, and they worked with downstream value chain partners to reach a final product that was feasible for the value chain and acceptable to the brand Solutions/consumers.
