Some people think that white sneakers look best when beaten and worn. Others know that you will never wear a pair of rustic Jordan shoes (video). If you really want to clean sports shoes, the amount of work required depends on the material of the shoes. But at least, you should make them look less dirty.
Shoe lasts: They are ideal for keeping the shape of the shoes when cleaning them. In a pinch, you can stuff your shoes with newspapers or old T-shirts and rags.
Crep Protect wipes: These individually sealed wipes are great for cleaning shoes, especially when you are in a hurry and don’t want to use a bunch of supplies.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: To clean the sturdy surface of shoes, any type of melamine sponge can work well-they have the appropriate degree of wear and can remove dirt without damaging the bottom surface.
Dishwashing Liquid: We used seventh-generation dishwashing liquid or Dawn, but everything you have on hand should be fine.
OxiClean (for heavy stains): Use with care, but OxiClean can remove dirt on canvas sneakers, otherwise it will refuse to give in.
Plan for five minutes to an hour (plus drying time), depending on the type of shoes you have and how soiled they are.
The material of the shoes will determine how you clean them and how long it takes. But there are some common first steps.
To help the shoes maintain their shape, first fill the shoes with lasts or other things (such as rags or newspapers). This will make the shoes easier to handle and provide cushioning to absorb any liquid that happens to seep in.
If you have a shoe brush, use it to remove loose dirt. An old toothbrush, soft nail brush, or even a soft cloth will work. The goal here is to remove any dust and dirt without pushing it into deeper materials.
Fortunately, leather sneakers are the easiest to clean. If you are using Crep Protect Wipes, please open a new one, and then gently wipe off any traces with the soft side of the cloth. If the dirt is stubborn, wipe with the textured side. If you don’t have Crep Protect Wipes, the magic eraser can also work well (but be sure to move it gently, because the eraser may wear out if you apply too much force).
To make it easier to reach the corners and crevices that are difficult to clean, you can remove the laces (but keeping the laces on will help maintain the shape of the shoe).
Canvas shoes like Chuck Taylors and Supergas are difficult to clean because dirt can seep into the fabric of the shoe. However, canvas can usually withstand a lot of scrubbing, so most stains can be removed with some work.
After mixing some detergent and water, scrub the shoes with a toothbrush in small circular motions to clean the shoes. When finished, wipe with a damp towel to remove any remaining foam.
Let your shoes dry between rounds of cleaning. If they are still wet, you will not be able to tell how much dirt is left.
If your sneakers are still stained, try using a stain remover such as Tide or OxiClean. Apply the detergent, let the liquid stand for about 5 minutes, and then wipe it gently with a damp cloth. I was hesitant to try this radical thing at first, but sneaker cleaning legend Jason Markk said it’s okay, so I’m fine.
A hotly debated topic is whether you should throw your shoes in the water. Some people have successfully done this. But don’t ignore the story of the shoe breaking down in the washing machine (this happened to Wirecutter’s senior editor Jen Hunter). So please proceed with caution, as this is not a gentle process.
Knitted shoes, such as Nike’s Flyknit or Adidas’ Primeknit, are very comfortable and have great elasticity. They are also clean nightmares. If you rub too hard, it may damage the fabric.
First dip a clean cloth in soapy water, and then use it to gently scrub the shoes. To maintain the structure of the shoe, work in the knitting direction as much as possible. Wipe off any soap residue.
As with canvas sneakers, for knitted shoes, you can use stronger cleaners as needed. However, since you should not scrub the knitted fabric as hard as other materials, please always touch it lightly.
To clean the midsole, moisten the magic eraser and use it to scrub the edge of the sole. Save this step to the end in case you drip while cleaning the upper. Regardless of the type of shoes you are cleaning, the process is the same.
When I was working on this piece, I tried to clean the white knit Stan Smiths of my partner. We just say that the improvement is trivial, even after many attempts over many days. Sometimes you have to admit that your sneakers will never be as shiny as they were when they were out of the box. Maybe it’s okay.
