Cabarus County volunteers broke records and collected more than 100,000 donations for school supplies

With many students in our area returning to the classroom, having enough school supplies can greatly change the trajectory of students from low-income families towards a successful future.
Despite the difficult year caused by the pandemic, residents of Cabarus County are committed to helping students and their families financially affected by the virus.
Cabarus County exceeded the previous year’s record and collected more than 100,000 materials.
With the aid of the Rotary Club 7680 grant and matching funds from the Concord-Afton Sunset Rotary Club, 14 acrylic brochure wall mounts were purchased and installed in 14 Caballos County schools and Kannapolis serving high school students City school.
Approximately 7,900 supplies were provided to 14 schools and installed on wall brackets so that students could easily obtain the supplies they needed.
In addition, school nurses were provided with handbags and paper towels, large boxes of paper towels, single packs of paper towels, bottled hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.
Staples at 1480 Concord Pkwy N in Concord sells a pre-packaged box of 19 supplies to customers for $5, and they put these boxes in the 9 School Tools collection box.
Since 1997, the WSOC-TV 9 School Tools program has worked with education coordinators in North Carolina and South Carolina to collect school supplies and distribute them to students in grades K-12 for free.
All materials distributed are used to create an attractive learning environment and support the academic and personal growth of students whose families lack the resources to purchase school supplies.
Special thanks to Cindy Fertenbaugh, 9 School Tools Coordinator, Cabarus County, for his dedicated service to students in Cabarus County over the years.
Fertenbaugh said: “It takes a lot of time, but I am very pleased to know how many children and teachers we have helped.”
